Musical Memory & Mental Practice
Memorized performance - for some it comes easily, for others it presents a perpetual struggle.
Fortunately, psychological research offers a wealth of information on what the most successful techniques for efficient, secure memorization are (and aren’t). This 5-step method is a result of extensive research in combination with my pedagogical experience, and consistently leads to successful, reliable memorized performance – for musicians ranging from reluctant first-time memorizers to experienced naturals. Participants won’t just listen to a talk about memorization, they will actually apply the method, memorizing about 32 measures of music with only about ten minutes of targeted work.
The No-Fail, No-Pain Path to 10ths and Fingered Octaves
10ths and fingered octaves are a staple in virtuosic violin repertoire.
However, due to their expanded nature, they present an elevated injury risk for every violinist, so it is critical to have a physically healthy approach to learning them. Get hands-on experience with step-by-step exercises to take any violinist from never having played expanded-hand double stops to playing one octave scales in 10ths and fingered octaves without tension, pain, or injury.

Banishing Banana Peels! Preparing Unevenly Measured Runs for Reliable Execution
While extremely rapid, long, irregularly-measured runs appear in a great deal of virtuosic music,
many struggle to execute them consistently. Ever see the Charlie Chaplin scene where he slips on a banana peel and ends up flat on his back? That is what it sounds like when a fast, irregularly-measured passage goes awry. Together, we’ll learn and apply the practice techniques that guarantee passage performance success, even when anxious and under pressure. Banish the Banana Peel!
Practice Makes Permanent
Practice doesn’t necessarily make perfect – it makes permanent!
This shift in how to think about what practicing does has widespread implications for how we should play, rehearse, and practice. This seminar explores three meta-applications and see how they can supercharge practice sessions leading to better results in less time.
How to Hear Sounds in your Head: Aural Skills Training in private lessons and group instruction
Some musicians really “get it".”
They play in-tune quickly; they “feel” the rhythm. What separates these students from their average, or struggling peers? Sometimes it’s work ethic… but sometimes it's something we can’t see or easily quantify: their inner musicianship skills, a.k.a. aural skills! Bring your instruments, and your ears, as we explore a plethora of fun, easy-to-implement string-based aural skills exercises that will get all of your students’ inner ears in tip-top shape.
